At Calco, we do more than just offer vape insurance. We’ve also lobbied Congress on behalf of vape and e-cigarette products, manufacturers, and enthusiasts. There was always an undercurrent of people who were looking to ban these products, whether they were funded by Big Tobacco or not. Recently, efforts to ban flavored vaping products have increased in severity, number, and likelihood. Calco Insurance stands athwart these efforts, in hopes of both keeping vape products legal and improving general knowledge about them.
Trump’s FDA Moves to Ban Flavored Vaping Products
The Federal Drug Administration has recently said that they will ban all flavored vaping products. This was announced by the Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, on the heels of a meeting between Azar, the acting Commissioner of the FDA and Trump himself. This may come as a surprise to many who had hoped that Trump would not allow this to happen. But, Trump’s own words after the meeting to reporters were: “People are dying with the vaping.” This is a highly debatable statement in the extreme. So many of the recent deaths are all attributable to “black market” vape products, the kinds that wouldn’t be sold in a store and/or covered by insurance. To say that “people are dying with the vaping” is to make a simplistic statement with essentially no nuance whatsoever, but it is, alas, all too common for critics of vaping at this juncture.
Secretary Azar went on to say: “the Trump Administration is making it clear that we intend to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes… we will not stand idly by as these products become an on-ramp to combustible cigarettes or nicotine addiction for a generation of youth.” This flies in the face of what many of us already know: that e-cigarettes and e-cigarette products actually can keep youth from smoking cigarettes. These products are so much better for people of any age than regular cigarettes. The Trump Administration has had no qualms about reducing the regulations on any number of industries, but unfortunately, the vaping industry is not among them. Of course, even if a ban was to be instituted tomorrow (and it literally can’t be) it’s not like people are all of a sudden going to throw away their e-cigarette products just because the government told them to. All this will do is cause the black market to grow, getting all that more lucrative and dangerous.
